Tweetie 2 for the iPhone was one of the most popular Twitter clients, so popular that Twitter actually acquired the developer and renamed the app Twitter for iPhone. Despite the developers claims that Tweetie 2 for Mac was still in the works, many people were left wondering what would become of the desktop client.

Tweetie 1.2.8 Update

Today, showing that there is still some development happening, atebits released a minor update for Tweetie. Tweetie 1.2.8 addresses some of the changes that Twitter will be making to its APIs in mid August and also remove the registration screen, since that is no longer required. – This is for all practical purposes, the official Twitter desktop client for Mac. Previously users could download a free, ad supported version of the client or register for $20 to remove the ads. Hey, we understand that ads help pay the bills, and the $20 fee was well worth it.

Additional changes in Tweetie 1.2.8 include:

  • Fixes oAuth bug that affected a handful of users.
  • Increased security around your account.
  • Disabled posting to image host using the deprecated authentication method.
  • Registration section removed.
  • To comply with the Twitter ToS, on July 1st Fusion Ads will no longer be displayed.
  • Tweets no longer say they’re from “Tweetie for iPhone,” but instead “Tweetie for Mac.”
  • An option in “advanced” settings to updated your iChat status when you tweet.
  • Improved Magic Mouse support.

Despite the changes, there has been no update to the Tweetie website or developer’s blog.
