While Adobe Photoshop may be the most popular image editing program for professionals, ask anyone who cannot afford to spend an arm and a leg what photo editing software to purchase for OS X and they will likely give you one of two answers: GIMP or Pixelmator.

For $60 Pixelmator gives you most of the functions and features found in Photoshop (aside from the new magical stuff in CS5). It is a small price to pay for excellent software.
